Palma, Castle de Bellver, Bellver Castle.
Majorca, Spain, Balearic Islands |
Palma, Castle de Bellver, Bellver Castle This circular castle is perched on top of the westernmost edge of the Bay of Palma. We visited it by taking the open top bus ride around the city. It is a huge place, built like a Polo mint, with a hollow, circular courtyard and three cylindrical towers The views from here down to the Bay of Palma are fantastic. The castle was originally built in the 1300s as a fortress, but has since been used as a prison and the summer residence of the Kings of Majorca. Don't expect any cafes or bars here. There is just a drinks machine and a public loo.
The city of Palma is well worth a visit during your stay in Mallorca. Over half the residents of Majorca live here, add to this the numbers of visitors and consequently the streets are busy and crowded. Although it has its origin it Roman times, most of the city today, such as the tree lined avenue, "La Rambla" originated from the 19th century. The current ring road replaces the old city walls and the Passeig Maritim (promenade) used to be part of the sea until the 1950s! Palma does not have its own beach – the residents tend touse Ca'an Pastilla to the east or Cala Mayor to the west.
