Soller and Port de Soller.
Majorca, Spain, Balearic Islands |
Soller and Port de Soller Port de Soller is nestled in an almost circular bay, with a backdrop of orange and lemon orchards and huge mountains. This is a very busy town, extremely popular with tourists, since it is the coastal terminus for the old wooden train, which travels from Palma into the mountains and then down to the sea at Port de Soller. The old wooden carriages often retain all of their one hundred year old character, with leather upholstery, brass luggage racks and ornate light fittings. It is powered by an electric locomotive. This is a great way to see the interior of Mallorca, with its mountains, olive trees and stunning views. The beach at Port de Soller is a mixture of sand and fine pebbles. It is not wide but does extend for nearly the whole bay. The water is shallow and calm, being so sheltered by the circular bay and the mountains. The warm waters would be perfect for very small children but we found the heat and lack of a breeze quite oppressive (we were here in peak season). If you are thinking of driving to Soller, we must recommend the new tunnel linking it to the main Palma road. This tunnel is nearly3 km long and cuts straight through the steepest and wiggliest roads. After a day of hard driving on mountain roads, this was a motorist's dream. No views to speak of, granted, but wide, flat straight roads. A welcome relief!
